Bacteria in the swamp feed on deleterious waste emanating from the Copperbelt mines turning them into innocuous by-product (precipitate) on which fish and crustacea feed. I discovered this in 1993 in Chililabombwe when I converted the Lubengele Tailings Dam to an artificial wetland to simulate Lukanga Swamp. This finding can be replicated around the country be it Bangweuelu or Lochinvar. As climate change intensifies, this will become an imperative!

People are hungry so they will even catch those small fingerlings to eat thereby not allowing fish time to multiply.

I wish the residents of the Lukanga Swamps, good fortune in their innitiatives. Especially the women, who, as in most countries and communities, are the most pro active in finding solutions. All the best to you all!

Just like in the Bangueulu wetlands, the government ought to ban permanent human settlement in the swamps and elsewhere in the Kafue river basin. It causes pollution from untreated human waste which is dumped into the swamp. Fishing throughout the year does not give fish time to breed.

Its started way back when all the hippo were erradicated, they used to keep the canals to the Kafue open which allowed water to flow in Plus fishing with mosiquito nets didnt help
We must learn to accept our failures in looking after the enviroment and water
